R & D Excellence

Research and Development are at the core of our global success. Through R&D, we have developed the spectrum of more than 200 orthopaedic products available to surgeons worldwide. Orthopaedics has evolved into one of the largest segments of the medical devices industry, and today, the industry is a $27 billion dollar growing market. The increased demand and need for innovation has been due in large part to an aging population requiring joint replacement; an increased prevalence of obesity; and the trend toward baby boomers remaining physically active later in life, which places demands on the joints.

The single largest segment of the orthopaedics marketplace is joint reconstructive implants, primarily for hips and knees. These implants are used in total joint replacement surgery to replace worn joints with components made of modern metal alloys and cross linked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, a high performance medical grade polymer. Today, as a member of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, DePuy Orthopaedics develops state-of-the art implants for major joints and tissues of the body – hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, ankles and toes.

With nearly 500 owned U.S. patents, with the earliest dating back to 1901, and an extensive clinical, research and product development legacy, DePuy Orthopaedics innovators relentlessly pursue high standards in orthopaedic science. Our research efforts are focused on key areas such as novel alloys and polymeric materials, innovative fixation technologies, as well as advanced biomechanics, tribology (wear reduction), and advanced surgical technologies. At DePuy Orthopaedics, our research teams have uncovered solutions for orthopaedic surgeons and patients by using cutting-edge technologies, as well as forging alliances with a broad range of renowned industrial partners and academic institutions.

From concept to completion, the DePuy Orthopaedics product research and development team helps inspire extraordinary orthopaedic results. The team is adept at moving beyond traditional thinking and into solutions that meet real patient and surgeon needs. We utilize first-class educational resources such as surgeon advisory boards, clinical studies, and research laboratories throughout the world. Our product scientists and engineers combine that pool of global knowledge with scientific understanding, intuition and persistence to help address today’s diverse orthopaedic problems.
