Pioneering Efforts

Among the pioneering efforts that have helped DePuy Orthopaedics achieve a leadership position include:

First low-friction hip implant: Working to provide a solution to the problem of arthritic pain and loss of joint mobility, Sir John Charnley in 1962 developed the Charnley® Hip, which was later manufactured and sold by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Its small diameter head was a revolutionary advancement and enabled it to be considered a “gold standard” in cemented hip arthroplasty.

First cementless hip technology: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. was first to introduce in the United States a patented Porocoat® Porous Coating that allows tissue ingrowth, eliminating the need for bone cement. In 1983, the DePuy AML® Hip was the first “cementless,” porous-coated implant indicated for biological fixation in the United States.

First mobile-bearing knee system: The LCS® Knee incorporates mobile bearings into the design for closer simulation of the anatomic movement of a natural knee. The LCS Knee was the first mobile-bearing knee approved for marketing in the U.S. and celebrates more than 30 years of clinical success. The Sigma® line of knees, including the Sigma® RP and Sigma® RP-F mobile bearing systems, are also now available in the U.S and was the first integrated mobile and fixed bearing knee system. Sigma® Knees have been developed with advanced materials to help surgeons fit patients with the knee that will provide them with a more natural feel and movement. They can also be used with minimally invasive surgery.

First multi-liner acetabular cup system: The Pinnacle® Acetabular Cup system is designed to accommodate multiple advanced bearing materials including standard polyethylene, Marathon™ Polyethylene, AltrX™ Polyethylene, and Ultamet™ Metal-On-Metal inserts, which all work within one acetabular shell. Pinnacle® Hip Solutions works with the body to create a natural film of lubrication between the implant surfaces. This unique technology, TrueGlide™, helps restore a fluid range of more natural movement.

First “Second Generation” Large Diameter Head Metal-on-Metal Modular systems: The Pinnacle® Acetabular Cup can accommodate metal-on-metal articulations of 36mm, 40mm, and 44mm diameter heads.

DePuy Orthopaedics has had exceptional long-term clinical data to support its products in the U.S. and worldwide at important stages of the industry’s development and will continue to innovate in years to come.
