Social Responsibility

“We are responsible to the communities in which we live and work,” reads Our Credo, a simple, one-page document that has guided conscientious interactions with our customers, our employees, the community and our stockholders for many years.

Since 1895, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. has had a leading role in the community. We are proud to support the communities in which we live and work. Examples of the “Credo in Action” can be found in DePuy’s charitable contributions, community-based partnerships, employee programs and volunteerism.

Volunteerism

In addition to charitable contributions, DePuy supports the good works of our employees in the communities in which we live and work. The DePuy Employee Community Action Team (DECAT) has been established to provide focused support to match employees with volunteer opportunities that interest them. Examples of projects in which employees have participated include fundraising walks or runs for the American Cancer Society, Arthritis Foundation or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Commitment to the Environment

Our corporate social responsibility extends to the greater environment as well. We are committed to environmental excellence through our policies, values, and best environmental practices. In 2001, our Indiana facilities achieved ISO14001 Environmental Management System Certification, and became a Charter Member of the EPA Performance Track Program. We are part of the Indiana Environmental Stewardship Program and were recently honored by the Indiana Water Environment Association for our project to reduce copper discharge in plant wastewater.

Charitable Giving

DePuy Orthopaedics’ charitable contributions are directed to causes and organizations consistent with our vision. The Company has identified four areas of focus for cash contributions:
Advancing Healthcare-Related Programs
Education
Community Responsibility
Arts/Culture

Advancing Healthcare-Related Programs As a company that is strongly dedicated to improving the quality of life for our patients, the highest level of consideration is given to healthcare-related requests. These requests include but are not limited to educational programs that advance medical and/or healthcare issues and healthcare preventative programs that support the welfare of our communities.

Education Support, either monetarily or through volunteerism, will be provided to assist with local educational needs. Only requests for special programs that are not funded through tax dollars will be considered.

Community Responsibility DePuy will provide support, either monetarily or through volunteerism, to local community needs and projects that will help to make our communities stronger. Special consideration is given to those projects in which our employees are actively involved.

Arts/Culture DePuy places priority on supporting programs that make the arts more accessible and affordable to the people that live within our communities. Special emphasis will be placed on programs and events that are designed to target family audiences and/or promote an understanding of cultural diversity.
